Why You're Not Losing Weight -- Part One

Healthy mindset

We are embarking upon Week 2 of 2018-- how is your New Year’s resolution to lose weight coming along? If you have already noticed some weight loss-- congratulations and keep up the great work! If not, do not worry because there is still plenty of time. Losing weight presents unique challenges to each individual, but it is not an impossible task. In my experience as a personal trainer, the most common problems that I have encountered can easily be linked to three broad factors:

  1. The individual’s mindset

  2. The lack of planning

  3. The diet

My goal is to cover the details behind each of those three factors that may be behind the troubles hindering your weight loss journey, and to offer advice to ensure your success. Additional helpful tips for losing weight can be found in my previous article, “Losing Weight and Keeping It Off”.

First, let’s talk about your mindset. Do you view going to the gym or working out in general as an undesirable form of labor? Chances are that you have had a job or a school teacher that you did not like, and because of that, you were left less than enthusiastic at performing assigned tasks to your maximum abilities-- the same goes for the types of workouts you do. The solution-- try out different workouts that you enjoy doing and change things up, periodically, to prevent boredom. The great thing about the human body is that there is not just one movement or exercise that is the magic pill to helping you get into better shape, so sign up for that Zumba class or consult with a personal trainer that can develop a workout plan that works for you and that you enjoy doing. The bottom line is doing something that you enjoy doing because that is the key to not only working out, but to work out consistently and over an extended period of time.

The mind is more powerful than most of us are willing to admit. When you change your mindset about healthy living, it makes the journey exponentially more doable because it becomes, dare I say, enjoyable!
